Some 500 teachers in the camps for displaced Jews in the American zone went on strike today for a greater food ration. Leaders of the Jewish Central Committee are attempting to persuade the teachers to return to their classrooms, promising to intercede with the Army and UNRRA to furnish them with the same rations as heavy manual laborers.

Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, advisor on Jewish affairs to the U.S. Commanding General in Europe, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that the displaced Jews “face a grim winter.” Reporting on his recent five-week tour of the DP camps in the American zones of Germany and Austria, Rabbi Bernstein declared that the Army had accepted his recommendation that 10,000 displaced Jews now living in sub-standard camps be transferred to more habitable centers. The Army has already begun moving some of the DP’s to former American Army camps and centers once used for Polish DP’s he stated.

Commenting on the morale of the displaced Jews, Dr. Bernstein said: “They are basically unhappy and frustrated, despite having their elementary needs met. These people must be resettled. It is an outrageous injustice to leave them in camps.”

Herbert Abeles, a representative of the United Jewish Appeal, arrived in Munich today on a two-day visit to study the needs of Jews in camps in the area. He has already met with representatives of the local office of the Jewish Agency and the Central Jewish Committee and discussed DP problems and future plans for their well being.
