Some 500 North African Jewish immigrants, who arrived in the port of Haifa on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, too late to be transferred to homes prepared for them in various settlements, spent the holidays aboard the Israeli passenger liner S.S. Jerusalem.
The Religious Council of Haifa, which took care of the emergency arrangements for the immigrants, provided them with a cantor, prayer books and holiday food. They were delayed en route to Israel when the vessel on which they were travelling was forced to put into a Greek port for repairs. They were transferred to a Greek vessel and sent on to Haifa where they were again transhipped, to the S.S. Jerusalem, whose accommodations were far better suited for the extra time they had to spend afloat.
