All Jewish schools in Buenos Aires were closed today as the result of a strike by some 500 teachers in a bid for higher salaries.
The Jewish Teachers Organization, in calling the strike yesterday, said the walk-out was due to the low salaries paid teachers for many years, and a conviction that responsible Jewish educational institutions were not satisfying the material needs of the teachers.
The request asked by the striking teachers corresponded with the increase in the cost of living index here. The teachers did not receive, during the past year, increases to adjust salaries to meet the spiraling cost of living in Argentina.
The local Jewish Educational Committee met to consider the strike and asked that the teachers return to their jobs immediately, and said that the possibility of increases would be considered.
