The Philip Murray Memorial Foundation, created to honor the memory of the late president of the CIO, tonight presented a $100,000 contribution to the Histadrut, the Israel general federation of labor, for the construction of a Philip Murray Labor Center in Eilath, Israeli pioneer city established at the head of the Gulf of Akaba in the extreme southern tip of the Jewish State. The contribution was made at a Histadrut Third Seder at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel which was attended by 5,000 persons.
The Israeli trade union movement will make up the difference between the $100,000 contribution and the final cost of building the center. Histadrut officials pointed out that the center would serve as cultural and educational headquarters for trade unionists in the entire Negev area of Israel.
The center will consist of three small buildings, scheduled to be completed next month, and a large building consisting of an auditorium, reading rooms, recreation rooms and other facilities, which will be completed next year. The presentation of the check was made by James B. Carey, secretary-treasurer of the CIO and of the foundation.
