An exchange of letters between Israel and France today formalized Israel’s purchase of a 50,000-ton oil tanker to be built in a French shipyard.

The huge supertanker is scheduled for delivery in 1962. The purchase has been made jointly by the Israel Government and Delek, Israel’s national oil company. It will be paid for from a $30,000,000 credit recently advanced by France to Israel.

(The national newspaper of the American Petroleum industry, “Oil Daily,” reported today that the Superior Oil Company may supply Venezuelan crude oil to Israel under negotiations that are apparently now in process. A spokesman for the Superior Oil Company in Washington said he was personally without information, but did not discount the report.)
