A total of 500,000 immigrants can be settled in the southern part of Israel between Beersheba and Elath, Dr. Joseph J, Schwartz, vice president of the Israel Bond Organization, stated today on his return from a ten-day survey tour of Israel. He was a member of a nationwide delegation of 39 Israel bond leaders.
Dr. Schwartz called for “our most devoted efforts” through Israel bonds, “to build up the port of Elath on the Gulf of Akaba as Israel’s open door to trade with Asia and Africa, and to advance the settlement of the vast unpopulated area from Beersheba to Elath to give housing and employment to a revived wave of immigration.” He added that “the flow of the record immigration from Egypt, Hungary and other parts of Europe would be jeopardized by alack of adequate development to absorb the newcomers.”
