The celebration of the 40th anniversary of Israel’s independence this past year not only attracted more visitors than expected, but ended with a $1 million budget surplus, according to outgoing Education Minister Yitzhak Navon.
Despite the Palestinian unrest in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, more than 500,000 visitors came to Israel during the anniversary year, although no more than 300,000 had been expected, Navon said.
