Fifty-three synagogues have been converted for other purposes during the last month, according to the Yevsektzia, Jewish section of the Communist Party. These are only in the Ukraine. The number of synagogues closed in White Russia and Central Russia have not yet been estimated. The Taganker synagogue in Moscow has been converted into a warehouse for potatoes. The “Emes,” Yiddish Communist daily, reports that when the synagogue in Holivenevsk, in the Pervomaisk region, had been converted into a club the workers found there Zionist circular letters from abroad and also literature instructing the Jews to fight against the Jewish colonization projects. The material has been turned over to the Ogpu, Russian secret police, for its usual investigation.
