Fifty-six ambassadors and prominent personalities of the Administration came to the Mayflower Hotel as guests of Israel’s Ambassador Avra-ham Harman to celebrate Israel’s 13th anniversary. More than 1,000 guests were present when a 50-pound cake in blue-and-white colors decorated with menorahs and a huge star, was cut.
Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson could not come because of the Cuban situation but Mrs. Johnson appeared. Secretary of Labor and Mrs. Arthur Goldberg also attended. The new African and Asian countries were represented in great numbers by their chiefs of mission. The Soviet Ambassador Mikhail Menshikov remained at the reception for a long time.
