Fifty-seven tombstones were overthrown in the Jewish Cemetery here this week, and police have undertaken a broad investigation in an effort to trace the source of the vandalism. One man, declared to be mentally unbalanced, has been arrested as a result of the police probe.
An editorial in the Winnipeg Israelite Press today declares: “Desecration of the Jewish cemetery in Calgary certainly made a heavy impression not only on Jews in Calgary but on the Western Canadian Jewish community in general. We believe that the broader community in Calgary was also deeply shocked by the act of vandalism and that the police will endeavor to uncover the culprits and bring them to the law.”
