There are 59 organized Jewish communities in Hungary with a total of 79 rabbis, it was reported here today by the world executive of the Agudas Israel organization. There are also 58 cantors, ritual slaughterers and other communal officials.
Quoting a report by Dr. Lajos Heves, president of the Jewish Communal Board of Budapest, at a recent meeting of the board, the Agudah said that there were 89 Tamul Torahs in Hungary, but that 83 have only one teacher. The total number of students in these schools is some 3,200. The lone yeshiva has 68 students.
According to the Agudah, Dr. Heves expressed gratitude to both the Hungarian Government and Jewish organizations abroad for their assistance to the Hungarian Jewish community. He singled out for special mention the government’s assistance in social welfare matters and shipments of medicine, food and clothing from worldwide Jewish organizations.
The extension of Jewish education and the care of Jewish youth in general was discussed at the Budapest conference. The recent death of Menyhert Spiegel, president of the Orthodox Jewish Community of Budapest, was also announced today by the Agudah.
