Six Jewish students were severely beaten up today when anti-Semitic excesses were renewed at the University of Budapest, the fighting being particularly severe in the School of Philosophy.
A non-Jewish professor, Tomanovszky, was among those beaten up, when he came to the defense of the Jewish students.
The government took measures to suppress the disturbances, surrounding the University with a police cordon.
The excesses broke out when a rumor became current that a modification of the numerus clausus regulation is in the offing.
At today’s session of Parliament, the deputies, Gal and Vaszonyi, again interpellated the government on the numerus clausus question and showed that the University is accepting students, not in accordance with their qualifications, but on the basis of racial origin.
The Minister of Education, replying to this interpellation, replied that there is no justification for such a system. He promised an improvement in conditions and the most vigorous action to maintain peace.
