More than 60,000 children in 500 Jewish schools throughout New York participated tonight in the candle lighting ceremony which marked the opening of the eight-day festival of Chanukah, the Jewish Education Committee announced. The special significance of Chanukah this year when the United Nations are fighting a world war for the principles of freedom for which the Maccabees fought in ancient Palestine was the keynote of the celebration in the Jewish schools.
The celebration will be followed tomorrow evening by the annual Jewish Education dinner at the Hotel Astor which will be attended by more than 1,000 community leaders active in the field of Jewish education. The speakers at the dinner will include Samuel S. Schneiraon, president of the Jewish Education Committee who recently succeeded Judge Samuel I. Roseman in that post; Dr. David de Sola Pool, Bernard Semel and Dr. Shalom Spiegel, professor of medieval literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
