More than 60,000 Jewish families, half of the entire German-Jewish population, have registered at the Palestine bureau in Berlin to obtain information regarding emigration to Palestine, it was learned from highly reliable sources today. Only a very small proportion of these families are Zionists but all are anxious to leave Germany as soon as possible.
The position of the Jews of Germany today is no better than it was in the first days of the Nazi revolution. A wave of terror has suddenly been renewed in the last three days, both in Berlin and in the provinces, and a new series of excesses has been reported.
On Wednesday the home of the Polish Jew, Moishe Poliwood, in the Grenadierstrasse, was invaded by Nazis who dragged Poliwood from the house. He has disappeared without a clue as to his whereabouts.
Another Nazi group kidnaped the twenty-one-year-old son of a milk-dealer, Mendel Scherer. Young Scherer was later found with both legs smashed, totally blind in one eye, and his face pitifully crushed.
He was taken to a hospital in a dying condition.
The body of a young Jewish girl of Breslau was found on a highway near Grossen. She had been forcibly taken from her home in an automobile and shot to death. Her handbag, containing a sum of money, was found near her body, untouched.
These isolated cases are an incomplete list, but a rigorous guard maintained at the hospitals, as well as the ban on publication of obituary notices, make it most difficult to obtain more details.
