Spurred on by the enthusiastic addresses of Governor Frank G. Allen, Rabbi Harry Levi, of Boston, and the Hon. Elihu D. Stone, and actuated by the desire to do their share in furthering the relief work of the Allied Jewish Campaign, 150 men and women contributed $4,500 at the banquet held at Temple Beth El, which launched the drive here.
This sum represents about one-half of the quota of $10,000 assigned to the Lynn community for the Allied Jewish Campaign. Governor Allen headed the list of contributors with $100.
Preceding the banquet was an afternoon conference at which Robert Szold of New York was the guest speaker. In his address, Mr. Szold stressed the economic possibilities for the development of Palestine, as well as the economic plight of the Jews in other European countries, pointing out that the extent of this development and relief can be measured only by the interest and money of American Jewry.
At this session quotas for the various cities comprising the Northern Massachusetts District were assigned the sum of $60,000, as follows: $10,000 Lynn and Chelsea; $5,000; Cambridge, Haverhill, Lawrence, Lowell, and Malden; $2,500, Salem; $1,500, Beverly, Everett, Peabody, Revere, Somerville, Waltham, and Winthrop; $1,000, Newburyport; $500, Gloucester and Woburn.
The following officers were elected for the District: Henry Yozell of Lynn, chairman; Bennett Silverblatt of Lowell and Ralph Bornchoff of Malden, vice-chairmen; Louis Ravin of Lynn, treasurer.
