Sixty-three members of Congress, including nineteen Senators, have notified the U.S. Post Office Department of their support of the proposal for issuance of a commemorative stamp next year to mark the 300th anniversary of Jewish settlement in the United States.
This was announced yesterday by David Bernstein, executive director of the American Jewish Tercentenary. Mr. Bernstein said that other members of Congress are expected to go on record urging that “this historic anniversary be commemorated by a special postage stamp.”
National Jewish organizations, labor unions and individuals from all parts of the country are also urging the Post Office Department to issue a Tercentenary stamp as a means not only of highlighting Jewish participation in American life through three centuries, but also of underscoring the strength and spirit of America’s free institutions.
