Notwithstanding the opposition of the extreme Orthodox organization and the apathy of large numbers of the Jewish population, the election to the Vaad Hair (communal council) were held on August 5th, nearly half the voters going to the polls.
Over 3,000 votes were cast, 1,200 for the Sephardic list, 900 for the Histadruth Haovdim, 365 for the Hapoel Hamisrachi, and 357 for the Zionist ticket together with that of B’nai Brith. The Vaad Hair will consist of seventy members.
