Most of the 700 Jews of Orleansville, Algeria, were made homeless by last week’s earthquake which destroyed a great portion of the city and killed over 1,600 people in the city and nearby area, the Jewish Agency office here reported today.
This is in addition to the previously reported ten Jews known to have been killed in the 12-second shock. These reports are based on information obtained by the Jewish Agency’s representative in Algiers.
In this city, the Jewish Welfare Committee has launched an emergency appeal for victims of the catastrophe. Grand Rabbis Jacob Kaplan and M. Schilli have sent a message of condolence and sympathy to the victims of the tremor.
