The oldest synagogue in America, the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, which dates back to the earliest Colonial days, was the scene tonight of an impressive religious convocation of over 700 rabbis of Greater New York representing all denominations–orthodox, conservative and reformed Jews. The purpose of the gathering was to invoke God’s aid for the uprooted Jewish victims of Nazism and to pray for the opening of the gates of Palestine to these homeless Jews.
The convocation was called by the New York Board of Jewish Ministers and the Brooklyn Board of Jewish Ministers as part of a national day of prayer and intercession called by the Synegogue Council of America, Rabbi David de Sola Pool of the Spanish- Portuguese Synagogue presided.
Dr. Robert Gordis, president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America, today released the text of a resolution adopted by the Assembly, protesting against the failure of the British Government to fulfil its promises to the Jews regarding Palestine.
