The same number of Jews will serve in the seventy-ninth Congress as served in the seventy-eighth Congress — but not the same Jews, it appeared today on the basis of almost complete election returns.
Re-elected for another term in office were Reps. Sol Bloom, Emanuel Celler, and Samuel Dickstein, New York Democrats; Rep. Adolph A. Sabath, Chicago Democrat, and Rep. Samuel A. Weiss, Penn. Democrat. Newly elected to Congress are Benjamin A. Rabin and Leo L. Rayfiel, both New York Democrats. Rep. Daniel Ellison, Maryland Republican, was defeated for re-election and Rep. Arthur Klein, N. Y. Democrat, previously lost out in a primary bout with Rep. Dickstein when the reapportionment of election districts in Manhattan pitted them against one another.
The defeat of Rep. Ranulf Compton, Conn. Republican, an ardent anti-new dealer, was not expected to have an adverse affect on the passage of the Palestine bill which he co-sponsored, since the bill is in the hands of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. A meeting to consider the resolution has been scheduled for next Wednesday.
