Eight American Negro editors and publishers will visit Israel for 10 days beginning Nov. 16 to study that country’s social and economic methods with a view to applying some of them toward the betterment of the Negro community in the United States. The eight, representing leading Negro newspapers, will tour Israel as guests its Government. Their visit was arranged through the Urban affairs department of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League.
Kenyon C. Burke, director of the urban affairs department, will accompany the group. They will visit educational institutions, youth projects, kibbutzim, health and safety projects and will examine Israel’s technical assistance program for African states.
The newsmen making the trip are Richard Edwards, managing editor of the Amsterdam News, New York; Robert E. Johnson, of Jet-Johnson Publications, Chicago; John H. Murphy, publisher of the Afro American, Baltimore, Tom Picou, managing editor and John Sengstacke, editor and publisher of the Chicago Daily Defender; Longworth M. Quinn, managing editor of the Michigan Chronicle, Detroit; Garth C. Reeves, publisher of the Miami Times; and Howard Woods, publisher of the St. Louis Sentinal.
