Violence continued unabated in Palestine today, taking the lives of eight Arabs. Three were killed and two were captured by troops who surprised the band attempting to dynamite a railroad track near Gaza. Three more were slain in attempting to ambush a military patrol near Saris. An army corporal was slightly wounded in the encounter.
Violence centered in Jerusalem’s Old City quarter, with frequent shootings and bombings. Four Arabs were slightly injured by a bomb thrown near the Mosque of Omar. A British constable was slightly injured by another bomb. Police fired on the bombers, killing one and wounding one. Old City gates were barricaded, but Jews were permitted access to the Wailing Wall. Later a bomb was thrown and shots were fired in the vicinity of the wall, whereupon police interrupted holiday services, removing the worshippers under strong guard. Police then prohibited Jews from going to the Wailing wall area.
An Arab police inspector was shot dead near the Jaffa Central Police Station. Three hundred Arabs in Ramieh were rounded up for questioning on the attempted assassination of a British constable, and the town was placed under curfew. A Jewish constable was shot and seriously wounded in Tiberias. For the second time in two days telephone wires were cut near Kalunia, cutting off Jerusalem’s ‘phone communication with the rest of the country.
