Eighty percent of the Jewish artisans in Soviet Volhyn are idle due to the lack of raw material, a survey made by Sudarski, representative of the Comzet, Soviet Government department discloses.
Mr. Sudarski, who returned from a tour of inspection in the Ukraine, reported to the Government department on the conditions prevailing among the Jewish population. Even those artisans who are employed are earning only seven to eight roubles a week. The Jewish youth in that district is chronically unemployed without the slightest prospect of finding work in the near future. Housing conditions are very bad. Many families of four and five members are crowded together in single dark, damp rooms. Rags or boards cover the windows. This condition affects particularly the health of children.
The only solution lies in a large mass transmigration and agricultural settlement, he stated.
