With 90 per cent of the electorate having voted for municipal councillors in the elections yesterday of this all-Jewish city of 47,000 persons, ballots were being counted today to ascertain which of the 100 candidates running on 24 slates won the fifteen council seats.
Election Day took on the aspect of a municipal holiday. Colorful parades were held through the streets and the sidewalks were thronged. With fifteen seats being contested by 100 candidates, last-minute campaigning was carried on with vigor. Thousands assembled in synagogues, halls and in public squares to hear speeches.
