The Hebrew University granted degrees to 910 students–the highest total for any exercise since the university was opened 32 years ago–at graduation ceremonies today. The exercise brought to 7,144 the total number of degrees conferred by the university.
The degrees included 85 doctorates, 56 of these being in the natural sciences and medicine. A total of 123 Master of Science degrees were granted, 40 in chemistry, 31 in physics, 24 in botany and 13 in mathematics. Two hundred and thirty-five graduates received Bachelor of Arts degrees in the humanities.
One degree–Master of Public Health–was awarded for the first time. It signifies completion of a one-year course created to meet the needs of physicians, dentists and health workers engaged in practice, research or teaching in social medicine and public health. A Masters degree was conferred for the first time on an African student, Benedict Etuka Onochie of Western Nigeria, who majored in agriculture. The graduates included six Arabs, one a woman.
