The 92nd Congress, which convenes in January, will include 14 Jews, five fewer than now, according to the independent Protestant publication “Christianity Today.” Of the 100 Senators, only incumbents Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, and Abraham A. Ribicoff, Connecticut Democrat, are identified as Jews. Neither was up for reelection this year. Of the 435 Congressmen, 12 were identified as Jews–two Republicans, Seymour Halpern of New York and Sam Steiger of Arizona, and 10 Democrats: Abner J. Mikva and Sidney R. Yates of Illinois. Joshua Eilberg of Pennsylvania, and Bella S. Abzug, Emanuel Celler. Edward I. Koch, Bertram L. Podell. Benjamin S. Rosenthal, James H. Scheuer and Lester L. Wolff of New York. Of the 50 Governors, three were named by the publication as Jewish: Frank Licht of Rhode Island. Marvin Mandel of Maryland and Milton J. Shapp of Pennsylvania, all Democrats. There will be a record 116 Catholics in the 92nd Congress, the journal said, with Methodists second with 86. The only state with all its Congressmen of the same religion is Utah, with four Mormons (its Governor is also a Mormon).
