A coalition of U.S. religious leaders seeking to restore the protections accorded under the now-defunct Religious Freedom Restoration Act is close to finalizing a proposal for new legislation. Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled as unconstitutional the 1993 law that made it harder for government to interfere with the free practice of religion. The new bill, which religious freedom advocates hope lawmakers will consider in coming weeks, would make federal funding of state and local governments contingent upon compliance with similar rules.
