The Carnegie Corporation and the Ford and Rockefeller foundations, the three largest educational philanthropies in the world, were announced today by the Anti-Democratic League of B’nai B’rith as 1954-55 winners of its America’s Democratic Legacy Award.
The selection was made” in recognition of the far-reaching impact these foundations have had in their encouragement of social, political and economic developments that reinforce democracy under twentieth century conditions,” according to Henry Edward Schultz, ADL national chairman.
Formal presentation of the current award will be made May 1 in ceremonies at which Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas will be the principal speaker. Acceptance of the medallion will be by John W. Gardner, president of the Carnegie Corporation; H. Rowan Gaither, president of the Ford Foundation; and Lindsley S. Kimball, vice-president of the Rockefeller Foundation.
The ADL established the award in 1948. This is the first time the recipients are institutions rather than individuals. Among earlier winners were presidents Truman and Eisenhower, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, Senator Herbert H. Lehman and Charles E. Wilson, who was chairman of the first President’s Committee on Civil Bights.
