A Joint declaration expressing Italian Jewry’s apprehension over the increased aggressiveness of the Arab countries against Israel was issued here today by the Union of Jewish Communities, the Italian Rabbinical Council and the Italian Zionist Federation. The declaration urged the world powers to take the necessary measures “to avoid a destructive war.”

The declaration also stressed Italian Jewry’s solidarity with Israel’s citizens and leaders, and expressed the hope that their firm and moderate stand would preserve the benefits of peace.

A delegation of Italian Jewish leaders which called on the director of the Political Affairs division of the Italian Foreign Ministry was assured that information in the possession of the Italian Government indicated that the Western powers were endeavoring to maintain Israel’s present borders. He added that the Italian Government’s policy is aimed at the preservation of peace and the reduction of tension in the Middle East.
