A Labor Party veteran who recently stepped down as chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel was elected speaker of the Knesset. Avraham Burg’s election to the powerful post during Tuesday’s legislative session was virtually assured the night before, when Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak’s candidate for the job, Shalom Simchon, was rejected by Barak’s own party.
