A leading Palestinian Authority official said the Palestinians would call off peace talks in less than a week if Israel did not agree to an American proposal calling for Israel to withdraw from a further 13 percent of the West Bank. Nabil Shaath’s threat came as Israel’s national infrastructure minister, Ariel Sharon, and other hawkish Cabinet ministers were expected to press Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to agree to more than a 9 percent withdrawal.
