A leading U.S. official on the Middle East said he believes Syria is ready to engage in peace negotiations with Israel. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Martin Indyk said Tuesday that Syrian President Hafez Assad has given the Clinton administration a “number of indicators” regarding a possible resumption of such talks during the past six months.
