A Libyan Jew who recently emigrated to Israel after smuggling himself out of Libya reported here this weekend that the number of Jews still residing in Libya has been reduced to about 25. Alfonso Pagni told Israel Radio that he was the first Jew to leave Libya since Muammer el Qaddafi became the Prime Minister in Jan 1970 following the overthrow of the monarchy in Sept. 1969. Pagni disclosed that he made his escape by hiding in a box of musical instruments which was being sent to Malta for repairs.
