A longtime Jewish professional was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Arnold Aronson, who served for more than 30 years with the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council, was one of three Jews to receive the award from President Clinton at a White House ceremony. The others were Sol Linowitz, a diplomat who contributed to the pursuit of Middle East peace in the Carter administration, and the late Albert Shanker, former president of the American Federation of Teachers and an advocate for public education.
