A measure to prevent insurance companies from denying policies to people planning to travel to Israel and other countries was inserted into a terrorism insurance bill. The Life Insurance Fairness for Travelers Act was inserted into the legislation Wednesday by the House Committee on Financial Services. The measure requires life insurers to make coverage available for legal foreign travel, and not charge excessive premiums for such travel. “This is a big step forward for Americans who want to travel freely and sends a message to the world that American citizens and businesses will not allow Osama Bin Laden and the rest of the world’s terrorists to dictate where we travel,” said Rep. Debra Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.), who has advocated the legislation since she was denied life insurance because she intended to travel to Israel. The Terrorism Risk Insurance Act now goes to the House Rules Committee.
