A member of the Israeli Knesset from the Shas Party proposed the establishment of special army units for fervently Orthodox soldiers who wish to enlist in the Israel Defense Force. The recommendation came amid reports that the number of yeshiva students receiving army deferments increased by 9 percent in 1996.
