A Moscow court is slated to hear an appeal this week by a branch of Jehovah’s Witnesses that is seeking to overturn a lower court ruling banning the group. Prosecutors, who charge that the group is a cult that destroys families, fosters hatred and threatens lives, are attempting to use a provision of the nation’s religion law that imposes bans on groups found guilty of inciting hatred. Since the law was enacted in 1997, some Jewish groups have been worried that it would be used against them.
