A New Jersey school board agreed to an out-of-court settlement in an affirmative action case that was expected to yield a landmark ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. The Piscataway school board agreed to pay $433,500 to Sharon Taxman, a white teacher, whom the board laid off in 1989 while retaining a black teacher with equal qualifications. Civil rights advocates, who paid part of the settlement, feared the high court’s ruling could have led to a dramatic reduction in the use of racial- and gender-based preferences.
