A private foundation said it will rebuild a synagogue in the town where the Auschwitz death camp is located. A group called the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation is planning to restore the Lomdei Mishnaot Synagogue, which was used as a carpet factory after the war, for an estimated $5 million to $10 million. The building in the town of Oswiecim, where there is reportedly only one Jewish resident now, was the first property returned to a Jewish community in Poland under a government restitution program.
