A rally marking the 24th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto revolt was held last night at the B’nai Jacob Synagogue following a proclamation by Mayor Jean Drapson urging all citizens to join in the observance.
The Mayor said in his proclamation that the event was a tribute “not only to the Jewish people but also to all those who would prefer death to the loss of liberty. It is in this sense that the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising has a universal significance. It is also a lasting symbol of a battle which, lost in its first stage, has developed into a triumph for justice over tyranny.”
A memorial service was conducted at the synagogue in which candles were lighted to symbolize the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis during the war. The event was sponsored by the Canadian Jewish Congress in cooperation with the Association of Bergen Belsen Survivors, the Association of Survivors of Nazi Oppression, the B’nai B’rith, the Federation of Polish Jews, the Labor Zionist movement, Mizrachi, the Zionist Organization of Canada and many synagogue and fraternal organizations.
