A U.S. House panel heard testimony from legal experts about legislation intended to restore protections for religious freedom. Like the Religious Freedom Restoration Act that was struck down last year by the Supreme Court as unconstitutional, the proposed Religious Liberty Protection Act would protect religious practices from government interference. The legal experts offered widely different views of the measure, with some arguing that it would pass constitutional muster and others calling it a misguided effort to change the First Amendment.
