A U.S. official said that first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton’s support for a Palestinian state is her own opinion and does not reflect a change in the Clinton administration’s policy that statehood is a matter to be negotiated between the Israelis and Palestinians. The comment came after the first lady told a gathering of Israeli and Arab teen-agers via a satellite link-up, “I think it will be in the long-term interests of the Middle East for Palestine to be a state.”
