A Ukrainian Jewish leader failed in his bid to become mayor of Kiev. Grigory Surkis, a wealthy businessman who is president of Ukraine’s top soccer team, finished second with 17 percent of the vote in the elections in the country’s capital. Surkis was instrumental in founding a new umbrella group of Ukrainian Jewish organizations, the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine.
