A violent controversy has broken out here over the opening of a new Jewish Orthodox school. The new school used a legal loophole which allows separate schooling for immigrant workers to set up classes offering two-and-a-quarter hours daily of specifically Jewish education. The existing Jewish school, Rosh Pinah, is obligated by Dutch law to limit religious education at 120 hours annually or give up government subsidies. Although the new school has only 19 pupils, Rosh Pinah fears that it will draw away its students, forcing it below the legal minimum, thus threatening Rosh Pinah’s existence.
