A well-known Jewish singer was honored in Ukraine.
President Victor Yuschenko presented Ida Gelfer with the title Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine last week.
Gelfer, 90, has been a soloist with the popular Ukrainian Jewish chorus Fargenigen since 1988.
The country also honored the 100th anniversary of the birth of the physicist-theorist and Nobel Prize winner Lev Landau.
The National Bank of Ukraine issued a nickel-silver coin honoring Landau, who died in 1968, as part of its “Outstanding Personalities in Ukraine.” The coin is worth about 20 cents.
