About 100 Jews attended an outdoor ceremony to witness the lighting of a 23- foot menorah in a Moscow square. The Lubavitch movement, which traditionally stages far larger gatherings on the first night of Chanukah, decided on a smaller-scale event this year to avoid possible tensions at a time when Jewish leaders are concerned about a possible resurgence of anti-Semitism. Other Chanukah ceremonies were held in locations throughout Russia, in some cases with the participation of local mayors and governors.
