Abraham Blecharowitch, cantor of one of this city’s leading synagogues and a former operatic performer, died here yesterday after a prolonged illness at the age of 56. Cantor Blecharowitch served the Congragacion Israelita de la Republica Argentina for the past 20 years.
He was born in Bukovina and studied music at the Vilna conservatory. He was director of the national opera in Riga, Latvia, and appeared on the stage with the noted Russian tenor Feodor Chaliapin and the soprano Toti Del Monte in “Rigoletto.” Later in his career he specialized in liturgical music and served synagogues in Warsaw and Bucharest. He came to Buenos Aires after the Second World War.
