The absence of a clearly defined international agreement concerning the policy which should be followed is hampering the work of rescuing the Jews in Europe and is having a particularly adverse effect on the neutral nations, the Manchester Guardian declares today, adding that it understands that preliminary arrangements for the forthcoming Bermuda conference will be announced here when Foreign Minister Anthony Eden returns home.
The Guardian emphasizes that the situation of the Jews in Europe indicates that there is little time to delay if measures in their behalf are to be effective. It points out that there is general uneasiness regarding the failure to take concrete action. Pointing to the recent deportations of Jews from the Balkans, the paper says that the possible spread of the war to this area will forever block the possibility of aiding the Jews there to escape and that action must be taken now.
A national committee for the rescue of victims of the Nazi terror has been formed here under the chairmanship of the Marquess of Crewe, it was announced today. Among the members of the committee are the Archbishop of Canterbury, Chief Rabbi Hertz, Lords Perth and Somuel, Colonel Czalet, Miss Eleanor Rathbone, M. P. and many leaders of political life. Four Jewish central organizations, the Jewish Agency, the Joint Foreign Committee, Agudas Israel, and the World Jewish Congress are also represented on this committee.
