Academics gathered in Ukraine for an international conference on researching and teaching the Holocaust.
Researchers from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and Israel met in Kiev from Monday to Wednesday to discuss “Holocaust Lessons- Lessons of Tolerance.”
The conference was devoted to the 66th anniversary of the Babi Yar tragedy and the 75th anniversary of the 1932-33 Famine in Ukraine.
It was organized by Tkuma, Ukraine’s central Holocaust foundation, and with support from the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
Among other issues, the conference addressed the problem of comparative analysis of the Holocaust and the Famine, as well as Ukrainian-Jewish relations after World War II.
“It is very important to research and teach the Holocaust and tolerance in a wider context of other genocide for deeper understanding and learning the lessons of Holocaust,” Igor Schupak, director of the Tkuma foundation, told JTA.
