Activites of American Jewish Women in Social, Communal, Religious Aspects

According to a report made by Mrs. Mortimer M. menken of the Jewish Board of Guardians, the number of Jewish children in juvenile courts has been reduced by twenty-one per cent in the past eighteen years. Speaking before a meeting of the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations, she said delinquency was attributed to inadequate religious teaching. Dr. Jacob Katz, chaplain at Sing Sing Prison, who also addressed the group, said of the Jewish prisoners there, “One of the main reasons they are in prinson is the neglect of Jewish training in their youth.”

Mrs. julius Ochs Adler made an appeal for support of the Thrift House, 9 West 57th street, a rummage shop conducted by the Federation.

TO GIVE CONCERT

A Purim concert will be given Sunday evening. March 4, at the City College Auditorium, Lexington avenue and 23rd street, by the School of the Jewish Woman. Dr. Trude Weiss Rosmarin, director of the School, will deliver and address on “The timeless Significance of Purim.”

Among Little Symphony, Menuchim Goroschin, Letb Glantz, Theresa turk, Joseph Buloff, Dvora lapson and Samuel Antek.

LARGE CALSS EUROLLMENT

There are now 4,000 women enrolled in the Americanization classes established by the Brooklyn section of the National Council of Jewish Women. The Board of Education supplies instructors and teaching facilities, and classes are held in public schools, or in community centers where no school is conveniently located.

This movement for adult education was started fifteen years ago when that term was still unfamiliar. Besides simple English, arithmetie and citizenship are taught them; the curriculum also includes symphony concerts, lectures on art, drama and stage production. Gymnasium classes have been started and medical, eye and dental clinics are held too.

MEMORIAL SERVICES

Memorial services for the Jews who died in the World War were held at the German-Jewish Synagogue, 632 Lexington avenue, last Friday night. Rabbi Max Malina supervised the services and made the principal address.

Two organizations, both devoting themselves to relief work for German Jewish refugees, have been organized recently.

The Friends of the German Refugees, with Mrs. Bela Schick at its head, is trying to raise funds to assist refugees in this country. and if possible help Jews leave Germany.

The other is under the leadership of Mrs. Louis Lipsky and was organized at the request of various leaders in the Zionist movement. It is working in conjunction. with the emergency campaign of the Jewish Agency, toward the settling and maintenance of reugees in Palestine.

URGED TO SUPPORT NYE BILL

The National Council of Jewish Women is this week urging its 200 sections to support the Nye Bill and demand a report on it from the committee on Foreign Relations. Senator Nye’s Bill authorizes the Senate to investigate the action of individuals and corporations in the United States engaged in the manufacture, sale, import and export of arms or munitions. The resolution is aimed not only at the manufacture and sale of arns for national use but at international traffic in arms also.

WOMEN’S ORT SUPPER

The Women’s American ORT is planning a supper, card party and dance on board the S.S. Majestic on April 12. Mrs. Florence Dolowitz is president of the organization.
